Recreating a Woman's School

This project was inspired by the Women’s March in January 2017. During that time, I witnessed people writing heartfelt messages on post-it notes and sticking them on a subway wall as an activist act, expressing their hopes for change in the face of sexism and racism. When I visited the wall, I was deeply moved by the collective power of these outspoken, hopeful, and vulnerable messages.

Inspired by this, I decided to embrace vulnerability in my own way. Drawing from the creative methodology of feminist artist Sheila de Bretteville, as practiced at the Woman’s Building, I created a series of collages that combined imagery with my own deeply personal prayers for the world. I developed these into posters, displayed them in public spaces, and documented people’s reactions to the work. Through this project, I sought to channel the spirit of hope and resistance I felt at the subway wall, inviting others to reflect and engage in collective aspirations for a more equitable world.
